The Best Life Ever

Update I just wrote a review for this concert for my music appreciation… and I kinda liked my into… so I thought I would post it.

It was an exciting day for me. I hadn’t seen a rock show in two years. Not since I saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, with The Black Crowes, rock’n the Gorge in Washington. Tonight would be different. The venue we were attending was the McDonald theater in Eugene, nice and small. I had never been there, but when I bought my tickets, general admittance was the only option. I really appreciate closer settings for concerts. Two years ago four chain link fences and 300 yards separated me from Tom Petty. Without a jumbotron in sight, I couldn’t help but feel like a refugee. Not this time though, tonight I was going to be up close and personal with the anti-heros of rock, The Queens of The Stone Age.

The rest of the paper fell victim to the restrictions of the paper… it was still a pretty fun paper to write.

Original post…

Well, I’ve come to the realization that I pretty much have the best life ever. Last Wednesday I went to a Queens of the Stone Age concert in Eugene. They kicked soooo much ass. No Joke, it was an amazing show. It was in a very small venue and I was able to weasel my way right up front. It was great, although I must say that I have never had so much of other peoples sweat on me…. which was pretty gross…. but it didn’t really get to me until after the show…. then the thought alone pretty much gagged me. The Queens of the Stone Age played so tight; it was just an amazing music spectacle to witness.

It was really funny cause right after this I worked my way to the front, and right as I got there, my camera popped open and my batteries flew out; never to be seen again. Oh, well. We all had a great time.

They don’t look like they are having a great time…. but believe me they are.

See!!!

And this is Leslie’s chinchilla Freud. He didn’t make it to the show, but I’m not sure chinchillas like large groups.

Then on Sunday we went surfing with Scott, Tasha, Dan, Erica, and Haley. It was a nice little drive to Crescent City in Scott and Tasha’s Jeep. It was pretty much the best day ever. The waves weren’t as big as I have seen them in the past, but I was riding one of Scott’s boards. It was just amazing. Beautiful day and the water was nice too, shorty wet suit. Some people were even trunkin’ it. Pretty much the most fun I have ever had. Then…

when the waves died down, and the wind picked up…. so…. we flew kites….
100_2073
It was the best kite weather…. Dan got his kite about 800 out…. then it broke…. there was so much string on it that it didn’t fall it just kept going until it faded of into the horizon. Kinda a romantic ending… in a littering kind of way.

Fairapalooza 2007

It was a true “battle of the bands.” Everything went as expected. When I arrived there was one thing that I noticed, there were more “Throwbacks” shirts in that audience than any other band. This fact instantly had people talking. “Have you seen all these fans for the Throwbacks? When are they on?” The buzz was rippling thought the crowd, the anticipation was building. The night started off with The Frankie Hernandez Band. Now you have to understand, there aren’t many reggae bands in Southern Oregon, and I had never seen any that were any good. The Frankie Hernandez Band, however, really impressed me.
I had seen them before playing covers in a bowling alley, and on their last song I had requested “Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley. However, they weren’t actually taking requests, so I wasn’t surprised when they played another song. They on the other hand were surprised that I continued to heckle them though the entire length of that song. Standing three feet in front of Frankie Hernandez himself, yelling “THREE LITTLE BIRDS!!!,” while holding up three fingers…. just in case they couldn’t hear me over the song they were playing. Did they get mad?…. no…. instead they played “Three Little Birds” while my friend Tasha and I danced…. looking back I kind of feel like a dick….
But back to Fairapalooza…. the next band was Chesterfield… a punk rock band from Medford… I have heard a lot about them, they have quite a following, but when it came down to it they were just a punk band, nothing spectacular. One thing I did notice is that they are one of the most polite punk rock bands ever… the thanked the audience and wished all the other bands well… so… that was nice of them.
Next was Yesterday, kind of a lame name, they should have at least gone with “yellow submarine” or “eleanor rigby” or somthin’. They were very good. That girl can sing. She can’t really dance, and she looked kind of awkward on stage…. but what the hell, they are still in High School.
Before Yesterday could leave the stage, “It” happend. The Crowed went nuts…. Everybody wearing a Throwbacks shirt rushed to the front. Screaming, Yelling, and just general mayhem. The announcer could barely be heard over the chanting… “Throwbacks, Throwbacks, Throwbacks.” I don’t even think he announced them… he just said, “I guess you guys know who’s next.”… then The Throwbacks took the stage

….More screaming and yelling…. They played the best set I have ever seen them play. It was awesome, everyone was going nuts. It is amazing to have that many friends and to see them going wild. People that had never even heard of the throwbacks started to join the crowd. It was definitely getting rowdy. A true show of Southern Oregon Rock ‘n’ Roll. Afterwards there were girls lining up to take pictures with Dan. I’ve never seen anything like it at any local concert.

Everyone was real happy with the set. Then Rental 58 played…. it sounded like some sort of half-assed emo/blink 182….. then the main event…. Fluid. They didn’t have near as many fans as the throwbacks…. and the fans they did have, didn’t move…. they just stood there…. it was really strange…. and it looked more strange with the lead singer spazzing out like he’s at some arena rock show…. but nobody reacted….. although I think I saw somebody puke, and then people moved to get out of the way…. but that was about it.
In the end they announced that Yesterday and Fluid were the finalists. I was O.K. with Yesterday being picked, cause that girl had some lungs on her, and that “Grace Slick” thing is so hot right now, but Fluid…. come on, just cause there from Portland…. and have some half-assed indie record deal…. gimme a break…. they weren’t even that good… I admit I’m not a metal guy…. so of course I didn’t like them…. but they seemed like half-assed pretty boy metal…. and I know I’m using “Half-assed” way too much, but it’s the only way I can properly explain it… if you’re gunna do metal…. go whole-assed. And the Throwbacks rocked Whole-assed that night. After the announcement the crowed booed really loud, and they sent security guards up to protect the judges…. and I know that kind of looks bad for the Throwbacks…. but it’s at least kinda cool… and who cares anyway. we all left and went out to the beer garden. Somebody went back to get something they forgot. They said that there was nobody in there and they thought it was over…. then they announced that Fluid had won… but who cares Throwbacks kicked ass and everyone that was there knows who they are now. Next time you can see them will be August 10th at the Ashland armory for another battle of the bands. It should be good kicks if you like Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Fairapalooza- prelude

Dan and The Throwbacks are looking forward to the Jackson County Fair’s
“Fairapalooza” on Friday, July 20th. It is a battle of the bands, with six bands that will each preform one origional song. Then top two will then preform a three song set and the winner will receive a nice hefty check for $3,000 and the runner up will get $2,000. One way or another The Throwbacks as always plan to have a real good time. There will be a beer garden and that is exactly the type of environment that The Throwbacks and their loyal fan base thrive in. All in all it should be good kicks to get out there and see all the bands preform. The weather says 20% chance of afternoon rain, but don’t let that dampen your spirits The Throwbacks promise to keep you warm with some hot licks and screaming guitar. You should definitely come and see the show, but if you can’t make it you can depend on me for total coverage.

Life is good…. and wild… which is still good…

Tonight we had a massive Thunderstorm with some really impressive lightning. I think I got some really great shots with my 35mm camera… we’ll have to wait and see. I only got two good shots with my digital. It is crap. It has a massive delay and you can’t mess with “shutter speed” so it is mostly just shoot and hope lightning strikes. I took 182 photos, and got two lousy shots, but at least it’s free. 100_1794 I have been having a pretty good summer so far. I’m working a lot, and playing a lot. 100_1846 This rain means I’m not likely to be working tomorrow…. will it be warm enough to swim…. hopefully.

See… I’m a man…. right?

I have always been a little self conscious about myself…. I mean I am kind of a dork… I spend way too much time on the computer and such… and I’m a pretty small guy… I should really be doing things to compensate… Like I should own a ’79 Trans Am or something… well, I am a dork and my computer has two monitors which is way cool in dork world, but makes me way dorkier in the real world…. so…. I thought I would man up my computer desk….. 100_1736 There… a couple weber carburetors should do the trick… now I look like a man… also I they are pretty messed up and I’m hoping to make one good one out of the two, and put it in my new 1971 Datsun 510 4-door….. that is manly right…. well I for one am still a little worried and will continue to figure out ways to improve my image… I’ll keep you all informed….
